Eye Health & Eyecare

Dry Eye Syndrome

When the lacrimal gland in the eye doesn’t produce enough tears, we get dry eye problems.

With dry eyes the eyes can be itchy, sore, gritty and red. They may appear to be blurry, sensitive to light and even water more than normal.

The causes vary from being over 50, working in air conditioned or heated rooms or looking at screens all day without sufficient breaks. Other factors such as smoking, alcohol and certain medicines can also increase dry eye symptoms.

Avoiding having a dry room or wearing contact lenses too long without wearing glasses to rest eyes and taking breaks from PC screens can help, and if needed there are many products that can be recommended to assist in the prevention & relief of the symptoms of dry eyes.

At the bottom of this page, we highlight a selection of The Eye Doctor product range, Winners of the Queen’s Award for Innovation, the range is backed by science and supported by experts.

Macular Degeneration

  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common condition that affects the middle part of your vision. It usually first affects people in their 50s and 60s.
  • It does not cause total blindness. But it can make everyday activities like reading and recognising faces difficult.
  • Without treatment, your vision may get worse. This can happen gradually over several years (“dry AMD”), or quickly over a few weeks or months (“wet AMD”).
  • The exact cause is unknown. It’s been linked to smoking, high blood pressure, being overweight and having a family history of AMD. (NHS-UK-AMD)

FAQ

Do I need a prescription for dry eye products?

In general, it is good practice to maintain good eyelid hygiene. Eyelid wipes provide individual wipes to help maintain good eyelid health.

If unsure of changes to the eyelids, please seek the advice and guidance of your local Optometrist.

Do I need to wait till my eye test to see my Optometrist about symptoms of dry eyes?

Most Optometrists have dry eye clinics or set time in their diaries to see patients with these symptoms. Patients are seen as supplementary visits in between their usual routine eye test if necessary.

Is a check-up for sore dry eyes free or do you pay?

In Scotland the NHS Supplementary Fees cover the cost of this check-up and advice but there may be varied private fees throughout the rest of the UK.

What are the symptoms of dry eyes?

You may have eyes that are itchy, sore, gritty, red, blurry, sensitive to light and/ or more watery than normal.

What is Macushield and Macusave?

Macushield and Macusave are Eye supplements containing the three macular carotenoids: Meso-zeaxanthin, Lutein and Zeaxanthin.

We get these nutrients exclusively from our diet, Lutein and Zeaxanthin from green leafy vegetables and brightly coloured fruits, and Mesoxanthin from some types of fish and seafood.

Research by the macular disease society shows that antioxidants in fruit and vegetables protect the eye against age-related damage.

The nutrients will not cure AMD, nor can they restore any vision already lost from the disease, but studies suggest these nutrients will help slow the progression of AMD.

As it would be difficult to obtain the large amount of nutrients that macushield or macusave supplements can provide, Optometrists tend to recommend taking nutritional supplements to improve the health of the eyes, especially in those diagnosed with macular degeneration.

What is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is a common eye condition that leaves the eyelids red, swollen, irritated and itchy. It can cause crusty dandruff flakes on your eyelashes.

It can be uncomfortable but not contagious.

The main treatment is regularly cleaning your eyelids and keeping the crusts away from the lashes.

There are several simple eyelid wipe solutions:

Blephaclean Daily Eyelid Cleansing wipes are free from preservatives, soap and any perfumes.

The Eye doctor wipes are pre-soaked with a sterile, preservative free saline solution.

Both wipes are individually wrapped and easily disposed of after daily use.

What's the difference between eye drops and eye gels for dry eyes?

Eye gels and lubricating eye drops may both be used to treat dry eye symptoms.

If the symptoms are mild the eye drops may be recommended as these may be sufficient.

In more moderate to severe dry eye symptoms eye gel drops may be recommended as they will be more effective than eye drops.

An assessment of the condition and health of the eyes by an Optometrist is recommended.
